So, he escaped through there and is basically like ratman and lives down there. Also, if you compare it to the killings in ravenholm, they both are the same. Theres a chance he escaped through the mines due to the fact you see brutal killings down in the mines in Half life 2 episode 2. There are many reasons on the chances he escaped and died.
